Vets warn dog owners to be wary over the festive period
As a responsible dog owner it is our responsibility to look after our dogs. Vets are urging all dog owners to make their homes safe for their dog over the Christmas and New Year period. There are a variety of unknown hazards in the home at this time. Many owners are simply not aware of the risk that they are putting their dogs in. Examples of some of the hazardous substances that will be in the home at Christmas are raisins and sultanas which are used to make Christmas puddings, chocolate, liquorice and sweets. Blutack to put up cards and decorations is also poisonous as is antifreeze which is used a lot in the winter months. There are an increased amount of hazards in the home including additional cables and wires for Christmas trees and lights which dogs can easily chew which in itself is extremely dangerous. Vet Carl Padgett, Chair of trustees for the BVA Animal Welfare Foundation said "Christmas is a time for families and we're reminding pet owners it's also time to remember the health and welfare of their animals too. Pet owners should educate themselves about all hazardous poisons in their homes and gardens and take simple steps to ensure they are kept at a safe distance from cats, dogs and other animals. The BVA AWF guide to Pets and Poisons is clear and simple to use and could help reduce the dangers in the home." Vet Bill Reilly who is the President of the British Veterinary Association said "Our message to pet owners is don't ruin your Christmas through carelessness. The loss or illness of a family pet is devastating but poisoning in the home can be easily avoided. Some substances may make your animal drool or vomit so they should always have access to clean drinking water. If there is any doubt or concern owners should contact their vets for advice immediately."
