A dog is for life, not just for Christmas
It is an overwhelming fact that dogs that are bought as Christmas presents are often subjected to neglect. Whether this is because the owners are not educated on the responsibilities that come with owning a dog or simply because the breed is not what the person wanted or the colour of the dog was 'not right' it is still no excuse, as the well-known saying goes 'a dog is for life, not just for Christmas'. Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Elaine Pendlebury says "We see the results of unwise pet choices every year, and it often starts when someone decides to get a pet as a present. This is never a good idea because buying a pet is a serious commitment. Pets can make a wonderful addition to a home but people need to think carefully to avoid making mistakes which can prove very costly, both emotionally and financially, for pets and owners alike."

There is a lot to think about when buying a pet and The Dog Breeders Association support the view that you should do thorough research before you purchase your new puppy. Why not speak to other dog owners and breeders to find out crucial information about the breed you are thinking to purchase? The temperament of a dog is critical; you should find out whether they are good with children and other dogs as this will be vital information to you. You should look into how much exercise the dog needs, how much grooming etc. Visit www.dog-breeds.co.uk/forum to discuss with knowledgeable breeders and other likeminded people.

It is also vital to make yourself aware of the vaccinations and medical treatment your dog will need. It is advisable to take out dog insurance as soon as you purchase the puppy. BreederChoice insurance is available online at www.dog-breeds.co.uk where there are two policies available for you, Essential or Essential +. An 'Essential' policy from BreederChoice insurance offers protection for up to 12months following illness or injury. Essential + BreederChoice insurance means that once your dog is insured it will be covered for the rest of it's life for the same illness as long as you renew your policy each year. There is therefore no financial need to compromise on the very best care. Premiums start from £16.48. However if you take out this cover within 48hours of collecting your puppy you will get 12 weeks FREE insurance. Visit www.dog-breeds.co.uk for more information or to take out your BreederChoice insurance today.
