Are Designer dogs a threat to traditional Breeds?
A new report suggests that dog owners are turning their back on more tradition breeds, in favour of so called “Designer” breeds seen with celebrities or in the Media.
The research was conducted by the Kennel Club who surveyed dog owners; finding that Almost 60% of the respondents said looks were the main reason why they chose to buy their dog with Almost one in five owners admitting that films, television and celebrity dogs influence their choice of dog.
Worrying the study’s finding’s could indicate a real danger to more traditional breeds such as the Norwich Terrier, Manchester Terrier, Irish Water Spaniel and Otterhound which might become endangered as people choose more “designer breeds”.
The study also showed that an alarming amount of people do not research the personality of the puppy they are buying – with 45% of people saying they did not do any research into the personality or needs of the dog breed they were intending to buy.
The lack of careful research into the breed could prove a costly mistake to future dog owners.
Speaking on The Kennel Club website Caroline Kisko, Secretary of the Club said: “Buying a dog is a lifetime commitment, which could well last for fifteen years or more, so it is very worrying to see that so many people are not doing any research at all and basing their decisions entirely on a dog’s looks or media profile.
“There are 210 breeds of pedigree dog recognised by the Kennel Club and every one is so different – from the lazy and the laid back to the energetic and the playful – so the choice you make is critical if you want that partnership to last a lifetime.

France uses GPS system to track dog mess
Police and council staff in Toulouse will soon have the use of a sat nav system to find the co-ordinates of dog foul on the streets of the city.
Public officials will use the handheld computer to position and photograph the pile of poop which will allow them to email the coordinates to the cleaners.
The experiment is the first of its kind and was initiated after hundreds of people complained about the amount of dog mess in the city. It was also insinuated that one of the reasons that Paris did not win the bid for the 2012 Olympics was due to the city’s dog fouled streets.
A spokesperson for the council has stated that the experiment will run for six months in 2011. He said that, “ While reports of the dirty state of our roads are often exaggerated, no one can now say we are not on top of the problem.”
