Introducing a new breed of sheepdog, the duckdog!

A pig that herds sheep may be a fictional creation, but the farming world is putting a real life twist to the sheepherding tradition with the introduction of dogs that herds ducks.

Roy, a boarder collie from Northumberland is hoping to become a member of the English sheepdog team and to help him train he is practicing by herding ducks.

On the surface it may seem like an absurd idea. However, the slow speed of the ducks has provided the perfect starting point for seven-month old Rory’s training.

Speaking to the BBC Rory’s owner, Emma Gray, points out "The ducks are a bit more predictable than sheep and cannot run as fast so they do not get away from the dog."
She said: "The dogs know the difference between ducks and sheep, but they are not really bothered as long as they are working.”

As well as having practical benefits to Rory’s training the duck herding antics are very entertaining to watch. Rory has a staring role in displays on his owner’s farm, stealing the show with his unusual choice of creatures to herd.

You never know maybe in a few years to Britain will have a Duckdog team.

Is your chosen puppy allergy friendly?

If you are an allergy sufferer choosing a dog can be a very tough decision.

Not only do you have to consider the usual elements such as size, agility and personality but you also need to try your best to avoid a pet that will give you streaming eyes and a running nose.

Luckily there are some breeds that are less likely to aggravate allergy sufferers.

Many people think that allergies are aggravated by dog hair or the dogs themselves.
However, most allergic reactions are in fact triggered by Dander, the dry skin that flakes off a dog’s skin.

Unfortunately no breed is 100% dander free, even hairless dogs produce some amounts – however some breeds produce more than others.

Any dog owner who suffers from allergies should also make sure that their dog is kept clean. The cleaner your dog is, the less Dander that is likely to become airborne.

A few breeds which are believed to be  more allergy friendly are:

-    Poodles
-    Yorkshire terriers
-    Maltese
-    Coton de Tulear
-    Irish Water Spaniel
-    Polish Lowland Sheepdogs
-    Bichon Frise

Whatever breed you choose ensuring your pet is well groomed and trimmed is essential to keeping the stinging eyes and sneezes to a minimum.

Could Toby be the oldest dog in the country?

Not many dogs live to see their 20s but Toby the Tibetan Terrier is thought to be as old as 21 and perhaps even older.

Toby’s owner, Ron Squires, is not sure of his exact age; he took the beloved pet in from a neighbour 18 years ago but they do not hold any birth details.

Toby was fully grown when he entered the Squires family and by Ron’s reckoning about 3 years old, making the pooch 21 now.

Earlier this year the dog believed to be the UK oldest, a Dachshund Terrier from Shropshire, passed away aged 20 years and 11 months.

If Rob’s estimations are correct Toby could well be the oldest dog in Britain.

When asked about the secret to Toby long life Ron said:

“When he was younger I also had a cat and he took a fancy to cat food, it’s his staple diet, though he also eats fig rolls and spaghetti.”

For a dog approaching 150 in dog years Toby’s is very active. He still enjoys three walks a day and Ron Says:

“He could have plenty of years left in him yet. He very rarely needs to go to a vet”.

Want quality family time? Why not get a dog?

One question that troubles many parents in the UK is how to have quality family time in a modern world full of electronic distractions?

The answer may be as simple as a walk in the park.

Research suggests that one of the best ways to spend time with your family is to get a family dog.

A poll surveying 1,000 UK dog owners was carried out for dog food makers Winalot by Mindlab International. Many of those surveyed said that that walking the family dog was the best quality time they spend with their family, better than family mealtimes or even a family holiday.

The poll also suggested that owning a dog is a great way to beat stress, with many owners saying that spending time with their favourite pooch is a better ‘stress busting’ tool than a family holiday or relaxing in front of the TV.

If you are thinking about  adding a puppy to your family unit you should consider taking out dog insurance early on in your puppy’s life. If you purchase a new puppy from a breeder registered with the Dog Breeders Association we will give you 12 weeks Breeder Choice Insurance FREE. One Very Lucky Puppy

Betty, a Staffordshire bull terrier from Kent, is recovering from emergency surgery after she swallowed a toy arrow which was almost as long as her abdomen.

Betty had been playing out in the garden when a gust of wind is thought to have opened a children’s playhouse.

Betty’s Owner, Emma Watson, heard some coughing and went to investigate. By the time Emma arrived Betty was no longer coughing and on the surface appeared to be fine.

The next day the family became worried when the puppy was off her food, started to be sick and didn’t want to play – unusual as Betty is normally very playful.

The family took her to the vets, where X-rays revealed just what Betty had been getting up to in the children’s play shed.

Betty had swallowed whole a toy arrow. The arrow ran all the way through her digestive system with the end lodged in her small intestine.

The arrow posed a fatal threat to the ‘Staffie’ and Vets had to operate immediately.

Luckily the operation was a success and after being kept overnight, to ensure her stitches did not come apart, Betty returned home.

However, it does not appear that the puppy with an alternative appetite has learnt her lesson.

Speaking in the Daily Mail, Ms Watson said: “as soon as she got home she tried to eat the TV remote control so we're keeping a very close eye on her now to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

Pebble Dashed Puppy

A five month year old puppy got a shock when he thought he was tucking into his favourite snack, a bag of biscuits and was actually eating a big bag of garden shingle!Alfie’s owner noticed that something was not right when she picked him up and he felt substantially heavier. She then took him to the vets for an emergency operation.

Alfie is now back at his home in Bournemouth recuperating. She told the Daily Mail, 'We thought he was just enjoying himself in the garden, but over two hours he'd consumed 250 grams of pea shingle. We couldn't believe it when we picked him up - you could hear the pea shingle. He was like a little beanie baby.’

She added, 'From the X-rays, the vet showed us there was no room left in his stomach. He's fine now and in good spirits. He is normally as good as gold, although he is like a mini Hoover. He's eaten strawberries in the garden before but nothing like that.'

A Holy Alsatian

A Vicar from Anglican church in Canada has caused a stir after giving Holy Communion to an Alsatian Cross named Trapper in his church.

Donald Keith the owner of the dog story at the centre of the controversy explained that he took his dog to the service as he had been told that
Pets were welcome to the service.

Mr Keith said, “The minister welcomed me and said come up and take communion, and Trapper came up with me and the minister gave him communion as well. Then he bent his head and said a little prayer.”

Mr Keith added, “I thought it was a nice way to welcome me to the church. I thought it was acceptable. There was an old lady in the front just beaming when she saw this.”

St Peter’s Anglican Church in Toronto has received hundreds of complaints from Christians over Canada.

The dog has subsequently been banned from receiving the sacrament.
